In the Phrynopus peruanus group according to the original publication. Lehr, Rodriguez, and Córdova, 2002, Zool. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd. Dresden, 52: 71-75, discussed the species and new localities, and noted that it is most similar to Phrynopus juninensis. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 406. See Duellman and Lehr, 2009, Terrest.-breeding Frogs in Peru: 113-114, for brief account.
