Comment
A distance of 3200 km separates this species and its only congener according to D.C. Cannatella in Frost, 1985, Amph. Species World: 261, implying concern for the historical reality of Barycholos. Barreto and Arzabe, 2005, Herpetol. Rev., 36: 198, provided a record from Maranhão, Brazil, and discussed its range. Araújo, Condez, and Haddad, 2007, Check List, 3: 153-155, provided the first record for the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Martins, Silva, and Giaretta, 2009, Salamandra, 45: 106-109, reported on the range. Siqueira, Aguiar, Pansonato, Giaretta, Strussmann, Martins, and Recco-Pimentel, 2009, Genet. Mol. Biol., 32: 47-476, suggested on the basis of karyological data that a cryptic species may exist under this single name. Lemes, Tessaroio, Morais, and Bastos, 2012, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 7: 157-164, reported on vocalizations.
