Type(s): Not specifically designated but including animal figured on pl. 20, fig. 3 of the original publication; holotype is ZSM 2695/0, according to Hoogmoed and Gruber, 1983, Spixiana, München, Suppl., 9: 360, and Glaw and Franzen, 2006, Spixiana, München, 29: 175. Type locality: Not stated, but Brazil; by implication. Considered by Bokermann, 1966, Lista Anot. Local. Tipo Anf. Brasil.: 88, as "?Brasil, provàvelmente Rio de Janeiro", Rio de Janeiro. Hyla abbreviata Spix, 1824, Animal. Nova Spec. Nov. Test. Ran. Brasil.: 31. Type(s): Not designated, although including animal figured on pl. 11, fig. 4 of the original publication; specimen likely originally in ZSM. See comments by Glaw and Franzen, 2006, Spixiana, München, 29: 173. Type locality: "fluminis Amazonum" = Amazon River, Brazil; restricted to "sudeste do Brasil" by Bokermann, 1966, Lista Anot. Local. Mus., Ed. 2: 209 (by implication of considering Enydrobius abbreviata a new combination rather than a homonym); see Hoogmoed and Gruber, 1983, Spixiana, München, Suppl., 9: 360, who suggest that under the first revisor principal the appropriate name for this taxon is Eleutherodactylus abbreviatus; these authors preserved current usage pending an appeal to the International Commission to give precedence to Rana binotata Spix. Considered a junior synonym of Thoropa milaris by Vanzolini, 1981, in Adler (ed.), Herpetol. Brazil Spix and Wagler: 41, although this was rejected by Hoogmoed and Gruber, 1983, Spixiana, München, Suppl., 9: 361.

Comment

Hoogmoed and Gruber, 1983, Spixiana, München, Suppl., 9: 360, considered Hyla abbreviata Spix, 1824, a synonym, and noted that this name has priority, because of the first revisor action of Wagler, 1830, Nat. Syst. Amph.: 202. Hoogmoed and Gruber proposed to put the case before the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature to conserve the current name. See comment under Eleutherodactylus plicifer. See accounts by Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 269-271; and Heyer, Rand, Cruz, Peixoto, and Nelson, 1990, Arq. Zool., São Paulo, 31: 295-296. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) binotatus series, Eleutherodactylus binotatus group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 221. Izecksohn and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2001, Anf. Municipio Rio de Janeiro: 82, provided a brief account and photo. Siqueira, Ananias, and Recco-Pimentel, 2004, Genet. Mol. Biol., 27: 363-372, compared the karyotypes of Eleutherodactylus binotatus, Eleutherodactylus guentheri, and Eleutherodactylus parvus. Heinicke, Duellman, and Hedges, 2007, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 104: 10092-10097, removed this species from nominal Eleutherodactylus. Cruz, Feio, and Caramaschi, 2009, Anf. Ibitipoca: 70-71, provided photographs and a brief account for Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Sugai, Terra, and Piatti, 2011, Herpetol. Rev., 42: 236-237, provided an 840 km range extension from a locality in Paraná into Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Moura, Lacerda, and Feio, 2012, Zootaxa, 3224: 67-68, reported on the advertisement call. Dias, Lourenço-de-Moraes, and Solé, 2012, North-West. J.
