Formerly considered a synonym of Ceratophrys ornata, with which it is parapatric. Cei, 1987, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Suppl., 21: 220-222, discussed this taxon in comparison with Ceratophrys ornata, with which it had been synonymized. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 15, briefly discussed the range in Paraguay.
