Lynch, 1982, Syst. Zool., 31: 166-179, discussed the phylogeny and biogeography of this genus and defined the subgenera (Stombus and Ceratophrys) noted in the species accounts. Mercadal de Barrio, 1986, Amphibia-Reptilia, 7: 313-334, discussed phylogeny in the genus. Fernicola, 2001, Ameghiniana, 38: 385-391, discussed the fossil species.
