Cystignathus macroglossus Duméril and Bibron, 1841, Erp. Gen., 8: 405. Holotype: MNHNP 166, according to Guibé, 1950 "1948", Cat. Types Amph. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat.: 31. Type locality: "Montévideo", Uruguay.

Types: UMB, status unknown; SMF 22470 (presumably exchanged from UMB) designated lectotype by Mertens, 1937, Zool. Anz., 118: 145. Type locality: "Nova Teutonia, [Santa Catarina,] Brasilien". Synonymy by Mertens, 1937, Zool. Anz., 118: 145.

Limnomedusa misionis Schmidt, 1944, Field Mus. Nat. Hist. Publ., Zool. Ser., 29: 153-160. Holotype: FMNH 9407, by original designation. Type locality: "Rio Paranay, Misiones Territory, Argentina". Synonymy by Barrio, 1971, Physis, Buenos Aires, 30: 667.

Distribution

Southern Brazil (Paraná to Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina; northern Paraguay.
