Sphenophryne wolfi Sternfeld, 1920, Abh. Senckenb. Naturforsch. Ges., 36: 435. Holotype: SMF 4228 (formerly 1156. 3a) according to Mertens, 1967, Senckenb. Biol., 48(A): 46. Type locality: "Inneres von Buka [Island], Deutsche Salomonen [=Solomon Islands]".

Removed from the synonymy of Batrachylodes vertebralis by Brown and Parker, 1970, Breviora, 346: 8, where it had been placed by Mertens, 1929, Zool. Anz., 806. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 79, provided a brief account as did Pikacha, Morrison, and Richards, 2008, Frogs Solomon Islands: 33-34.
