In the Cochranella ocellata group according to Ruiz-Carranza and Lynch, 1991, Lozania, 57: 1-30. Placed in the Cochranella spinosa group by Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 365. Cisneros-Heredia and McDiarmid, 2007, Zootaxa, 1572: 51, summarized the relevant literature. Cisneros-Heredia, 2009, Check List, 5: 912-916, discussed the range and suggested that this species may be found in adjacent northern Peru.
