This species was resurrected from the synonymy of Telmatobufo venustus by Formas and Veloso, 1982, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 95: 688-693, where it had been placed by Venegas S., 1975, Bol. Soc. Rev., 36: 77, provided the record for Bio-Bio, Chile, and detailed the distribution. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 420.
