Buenos Aires Province of northeastern Argentina, Uruguay, and southeastern Brazil (eastern Rio Grande do Sul).

Comment

In the Bufo granulosus group of Martin, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo: 56. Elevated from subspecies status under Bufo granulosus by Cei, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo: 88, and Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 195-196 (who provided an account), where it had been placed by Parker, 1935, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1935: 509. See also account (as Bufo granulosus d'orbignyi) by Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 25-26. Lavilla and Cei, 2001, Monogr. Mus. Reg. Sci. Nat. Torino, 28: 24, noted the problem of seeming intergradation of this species with Rhinella fernandezae (as Bufo) in Uruguay, although Borteiro, Kolenc, Tedros, and Prigioni, 2006, Zootaxa, 1308: 49-62, noted them as sympatric and distinguishable. Langone, 1995 "1994", Mus. Damaso Antonio Larrañaga, Ser. Divulg. 5: 23-24, and Achaval and Olmos, 2003, Anf. Rept. Uruguay, ed. 2: 11, provided for the Uruguayan population a brief account and photograph. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 24, briefly discussed that previous records of this species for Paraguay are based on misidentifications. Maneyro and Kwet, 2008, Stuttgart. Beit. Naturkd., Ser. A, Neue Ser., 1: 95-121, provided comments on the type locality, range, natural history, and conservation status. Narvaes and Rodrigues, 2009, Arq. Zool., São Paulo, 40: 1-73, revised the Rhinella granulosa group, provided an account for this species, and noted hybridization with Rhinella fernandezae in Buenos Aires, Canelones, Lavalleja, and Salto Provinces, Argentina, as well as the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Guerra, Baldo, Rosset, Borteiro, and Kolenc, 2011, Zootaxa, 3092: 36, suggested that Rhinella dorbignyi and Rhinella fernandezae are likely conspecific.
