In the Rhinella marina group according to the original publication. Santana, Gaiga, Storti, Santos, and Dixo, 2010, Herpetol. Notes, 3: 55-56, provided the first record from Mato Grosso, noted the absence of any records from Minas Gerais, and discussed the range. Maciel, Garcia, Colli, and Schwartz, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 57: 787-797, reported on the molecular phylogenetics of this species, and suggested that it is the sister taxon of Rhinella schneideri and Rhinella poeppigii.
