Alsodes monticola Bell, 1843, Zool. Voyage Beagle, Part 5: 41. Holotype: BMNH, according to Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 272, who noted that the specimen is in very poor shape. Type locality: "in the island of Inchy, archipelago of Chonos, north part of Cape Tres Montes, from the same great height as Bufo chilensis (from 500 to 2500 feet elevation) under a stone", Chile.

Cystignathus andinus Philippi, 1902, Supl. Batr. Chil. Descr. Hist. Fis. Polit. Chile: 119. Types: MNHNC, according to the original publication. Type locality: "Andibus Araucaniae et prope Valdiviam", Chile. Considered a nomen dubium by Cei, 1958, Invest. Zool. Chilen., 4: 276. Synonymy by Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 297. Without discussion, considered a synonym of Alsodes monticola by Lavilla, 1994 "1992", Acta Zool. Lilloana, 42: 78.

Distribution

Southern Chile and western Santa Cruz, Argentina.

Comment

In the Alsodes monticola group of Formas and Vera, 1983, Copeia, 1983: 1104-1107. Lavilla, 1994 "1992", Acta Zool. Lilloana, 42: 78, noted that an Argentinian record (KU 160537—Nahuel Huapi) required corroboration, although the presence of this species was documented for western Santa Cruz Province (48° 05′ S, 72° 25′ E), Argentina, by Cei and Gil, 1996, Cuad. Herpetol., 10: 73.
