Comment

In the Melanophryniscus stelzneri group of Cruz and Caramaschi, 2003, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 500: 1-11. See comments under Melanophryniscus dorsalis and Melanophryniscus fulvoguttatus, both of which were formerly considered subspecies of Melanophryniscus stelzneri. See account (as Melanophryniscus stelzneri stelzneri) by Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 207-212. Klappenbach and Langone, 1992, An. Mus. Nac. Hist. Nat. Montevideo, Ser. 2, 8: 175-176, considered all Uruguayan records to apply to different species. An English description of the species is available in Weyenbergh, 1876, in Napp (ed.), The Argentine Republic: 151 (simultaneously published English version of Weyenbergh, 1876, in Napp (ed.), Die Argentinische Republik). Cabrera, 2001, Cuad. Herpetol., 15: 137-139, discussed the distribution of Melanophryniscus stelzneri stelzneri. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 24, briefly discussed that records from Paraguay (e.g., Céspedez, 1996, Cuad. Herpetol., 1010: 73) are based on misidentifications.
