Distribution

Argentina in the Sierras of Córdoba (Córdoba Province) and San Luis (San Luis Province) at about 900-2000 m elevation; also isolated population in Salta Province.

See comments under Melanophryniscus dorsalis and Melanophryniscus fulvoguttatus, both of which were formerly considered subspecies of Melanophryniscus stelzneri. See account (as Melanophryniscus stelzneri stelzneri) by Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 207-212. Klappenbach and Langone, 1992, An. Mus. Nac. Hist. Nat. Montevideo, Ser. 2, 8: 175-176, considered all Uruguayan records to apply to different species.
