Melanophryniscus spectabilis Caramaschi and Cruz, 2002, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 60: 308. Holotype: MZUSP 9424, by original designation. Type locality: "BRAZIL, SANTA CATARINA, Municipality of Nova Teutônia (27° 09′ S, 52° 25′ W)".

Distribution
Basins of the Irani, Ariranha, do Engano, and Jacuting rivers, all within 35 km north of the Uruguai River, western Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Comment
In the Melanophryniscus tumifrons group, previously confused with Melanophryniscus tumifrons, according to the original publication. Giasson, Kunz, and Ghizoni, 2011, Check List, 7: 641-644, provided range extensions and discussed the range and erroneous records.
