Distribution
Known from the provinces of Chaco, Formosa, and northern Santa Fe and Santiago del Estero in Argentina, the departments of Alto Paraguay, Ñeembucú, and Presidente Hayes in Paraguay; possibly in adjacent Bolivia; Municipality of Porto Murtinho, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

In the Melanophryniscus stelzneri group according to the original publication and Cruz and Caramaschi, 2003, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 500: 1-11. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 20, briefly discussed the range in Paraguay. Céspedez and Motte, 2007, FACENA, 23: 31-42, mapped the distribution in Paraguay. Amaral, Landgref, Souza, and Uetanabaro, 2012, Herpetol. Rev., 43: 98, provided a record for Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and commented on the range.
