Inland from near Maracaju, Jardim, and Bela Vista in Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil), east-central Paraguay, and south into the Province of Formosa in Argentina; possibly into Bolivia.

Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 500: 5-9, who considered it a species distinct from Melanophryniscus stelzneri and in the Melanophryniscus stelzneri group. Baldo and Arzamendia, 1998, Cuad. Herpetol., 12: 5, reported the taxon in Formosa Province, Argentina. Prigioni and Langone, 1998, Cuad. Herpetol., 12: 52, reported the species in Mato Grosso, Brazil. De la Riva, Köhler, Lötters, and Reichle, 2000, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 14: 58, and Köhler, 2000, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 48: 69, consider this species (as Melanophryniscus stelzneri) possibly to occur in Bolivia. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 20, briefly discussed the range in Paraguay. Céspedez and Motte, 2007, FACENA, 23: 31-42, mapped the distribution in Paraguay.
