Known only from the type locality and Cerro Bollo in western Panama, 1500-1860 m elevation.
Most closely related to Incilius fastidiosus and Incilius holdridgei (both as Bufo), according to the original publication. Not formally assigned to any species group but in the original publication said to be related to the Bufo valliceps group; subsequently referred to the Bufo fastidiosus group by Savage, 2002, Amph.
