Records of this species outside of the stated range are attributable to other species. Ravichandran, Gower, and Wilkinson, 2003, Zootaxa, 350: 6, doubted the Indian record of Pillai and Ravichandran, 1999, Rec. Zool. Surv. India, Occas. Pap., 172: 32-35, as did Dutta, 2003 "2002", Hamadryad, 27: 156-157, who discussed previous misidentifications on which records from India are based. Gower, Bahir, Mapatuna, Pethiyagoda, Raheem, and Wilkinson, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 153-161, suggested that a cryptic species exists under this name from Wegela, Sri Lanka, which is more closely related to Ichthyophis orthoplicatus than to Ichthyophis glutinosus, with Ichthyophis forcarti possibly being the available name. D. Gower in Grismer and Pan, 2008, Herpetol. Rev., 39: 270-281, suggested that the taxonmic distinctiveness of Ichthyophis monochrous, Ichthyophis glutinosus, Ichthyophis singaporensis, and Ichthyophis paucisulcus needs confirmation via genetic analyses. Mathew and Sen, 2010, Pict. Guide Amph. NE India: 130-131, provided a brief characterization and photograph for specimens in northeastern India they allocated to this species. De Silva, 2009, Amph. Rep. Sri Lanka Photograph. Guide: 129, provided a brief account and color photograph for Sri Lanka. Bopage, Wewalwala, Krvavac, Jovanovic, Safarek, and Pushpamal, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 173-177, reported the species in lowland forest in the Kanneliya Forest of southwestern Sri Lanka.
