Caccone, Milinkovitch, Sbordoni, and Powell, 1997, Syst. Biol., 46: 126-144, reported on mitochondrial evolution in and biogeography of Euproctus. Thorn and Raffaëlli, 2000, Salamand. Ancien Monde: 347-365, provided accounts. Steinfartz, Hwang, Tautz, Öz, and Veith, 2002, Amphibia-Reptilia, 23: 419-431, suggested the possibility of Euproctus (in the sense of including Calotriton) is para- or polyphyly, with Neurergus and the Triturus cristatus group being derived from within it. Carranza and Amat, 2005, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 145: 555, removed Calotriton from the synonymy and placed Euproctus as the sister taxon of Lissotriton. Razzetti, Andreone, Corti, and Sindaco, 2006, in Sindaco et al. (ed.), Atlas Ital. Amph. Rept.: 160, suggested that the date of publication of Euproctus Gené, was actually 1839, not 1838 (although this is not immediately evident upon examination of the original—DRF), rendering Euproctus Gené a junior synonym of Megapterna Savi. Nevertheless, these authors note that Megapterna Savi is a nomen oblitum under Articles 23.9.1 and 23.9.2, according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999).
