Triton (Cynops) orientalis David, 1873 "1872", J. N. China Branch R. Asiat. Soc., N.S., 7: 226. Syntypes: Not stated; MNHNP 4763 (2 specimens) and 8120-21, according to Guibé, 1950 "1948", Cat. Types Amph. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat.: 9. MNHNP 8120-21 rejected as types by Thireau, 1986, Cat. Types Urodeles Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat., Rev. Crit.: 51, who discussed types and considered only MNHNP 4763 (2 specimens) to be syntypes. Type locality: "Tchékiang", Zhejiang, China; given as "Chüchow, Chekiang", China by Gee and Boring, 1929, Peking Nat. Hist. Bull., 4: 18; given as Tche-san, near Chuchowfu, Chekiang [= Zhejiang] Province, China by Brame, 1972, Checklist Living & Fossil Salamand. World (Unpubl. MS): 43, and A.H. Brame in Frost, 1985, Amph. Species World: 608. Regarded as a nomen nudum by Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2006, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 1: 337.
