Comment

See Guttman, Weigt, Moler, Ashton, Mansell, and Peavy, 1990, J. Herpetol., 24: 163-175, for geographic variation in allozymes. Collins, 1991, Herpetol. Rev., 22: 43, considered the two subspecies to be different species. Although this may well be correct, the former arrangement is maintained here pending published evidence. See Walley, 2002, Herpetol. Rev., 33: 60, for discussion of Iowa population. Williams and Corey, 2007, Herpetol. Rev., 38: 472, provided a record for the New River drainage of North Carolina and briefly discussed its range in that region. Hanke, 2008, Herpetol. Rev., 39: 231, provided a northern range extension in Manitoba, Canada.
