As for the single species.
Suggested in the original publication to be the sister taxon of Aneides + (Phaeognathus + Desmognathus). Vieites, Min, and Wake, 2007, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 104: 19903-19907, suggested that it is the sister taxon of a taxon composed of Hydromantes, Atylodes, and Speleomantes. Vieites, Román, Wake, and Wake, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 59623-635, placed this genus, along with their Hydromantes (sensu lato) in Hydromantini.
