Mostly closely related to Nototriton barbouri and Nototriton lignicola according to the original publication. See account by McCranie and Wilson, 2003, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 763: 1-2. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 578. Townsend, Luque-Montes, and Wilson, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 50-54, provided a range extension and discussed the range.
