Bolitoglossa obscura Hanken, Wake, and Savage, 2005, Copeia, 2005: 233. Holotype: UCR 2445, by original designation. Type locality: "Costa Rica, Prov. Cartago, 8 km S of Tapantí, Parque Nacional Tapantí, from Quebrada Valverde, 9° 43′ 18″ N, 83° 46′ 48″ W, 1555 m elevation".

Known only from the type locality in the Parque Nacional Tapantí, Provincia Cartago, Costa Rica.
Confused with Bolitoglossa nigrescens previous to its description, and in the Bolitoglossa (Eladinea) schizodactyla group according to the original publication. Raffaëlli, 2007, Les Urodčles du Monde: 253, provided a brief account and map.
