Type locality: "from along the Santa Rita—Old Creek Road, 8.5 km SW intersection with Vineyard Road, San Luis Obispo County, California, ca. 400 m, 35° 31′ 20″ N, 120° 46′ 40″ W", USA.

Distribution
Restricted to the southern Santa Lucia Mountains of north-central San Luis Obispo County, California, USA, generally above 400 m.
Comment
Confused with Batrachoseps pacificus and Batrachoseps relictus prior to its description according to the original publication. In the Batrachoseps (Batrachoseps) pacificus group of Jockusch, Wake, and Yanev, 1998, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 472: 1-17, and Jockusch and Wake, 2002, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 76: 363. Stebbins, 2003, Field Guide W. Rept. Amph., Ed. 3: 191, and Raffaëlli, 2007, Les Urodèles du Monde: 197, provided brief accounts, figures, and maps.
