Known only from Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding areas, Kerala, and from Virapet District, Srimangala Nadu, South Coorg District, Karnataka State, southern Western Ghats of South India, ca. 800 m elevation.
Inger and Dutta, 1987 "1986", J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc., 83 (Suppl.): 135-146, and Das, 2000, Curr. Herpetol., 19: 35-40 (who described two new specimens), resurrected Rhacophorus lateralis from the synonymy of Rhacophorus malabaricus, where it had been placed provisionally in synonymy by Wolf, 1936, Bull. Raffles Mus., 12: 214. Chanda, 2002, Handb. Indian Amph.: 175, provided a brief account. Daniels, 2005, Amph. Peninsular India: 170-171, provided an account.
