Phyllomedusa ? wynaadensis Jerdon, 1854 "1853", J. Asiat. Soc. Bengal, 22: 533. Holotype: Probably originally ZSIC; reported as lost by Jerdon, 1870, Proc. Asiat. Soc. Bengal, 1870: 67, and considered lost by Bossuyt and Dubois, 2001, Zeylanica, 6:15, who designated as neotype MNHNP 1999.5596 and described it on page 66-67. Type locality: Wynaad, Southern India by implication. Neotype from "Ganapathivattan (Sultan's Battery; 11° 40′ N, 76° 17′ E), Wynaad, Kerala, India".

Distribution

Western Ghats of Kerala and extreme western Tamil Nadu, especially north of the Palghat Gap, with its southern limit reaching up to Periyar, south of the Palghat Gap, 900-1200 m elevation.

Comment

Regarded as a possible senior synonym of Ixalus variabilis by Günther, 1876 "1875", Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1875: 573; Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 102; Thurston, 1888, Cat. Batr. Sal. Apoda S. India: 37 (see discussion); Boulenger, 1890, Fauna Brit. India, Rept. Batr.: 487. Name applied by Bossuyt and Dubois, 2001, Zeylanica, 6: 16, to the South Indian populations previously referred to Philautus variabilis. Chanda, 2002, Handb. Indian Amph.: 169-170, provided a brief account (as Philautus variabilis). Accounts (as Philautus temporalis) by Inger, Shaffer, Koshy, and Bakde, 1985 "1984", J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc., 81: 555, likely apply to this species. Daniels, 2005, Amph. Peninsular India: 156-158, provided accounts (as Philautus temporalis and Philautus variabilis).
