Resurrected from the synonymy of Philautus microtympanum by Dutta and Manamendra-Arachchi, 1996, Amph. Fauna Sri Lanka: 202, where it had been placed by Wolf, 1936, Bull. Raffles Mus., 12: 173. Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 181-185, provided an account and noted this species to resemble Philautus papillosus. Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 104, provided bibliography, systematic comments, and range.
