Ixalus oxyrhynchus Günther, 1872, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 4, 9: 88. Syntypes: BMNH (2 specimens), reported as BMNH 1947.2.6.39-40 by Bossuyt and Dubois, 2001, Zeylanica, 6: 25. BMNH 1947.2.6.40 designated lectotype by Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 200, who noted that the paralectotype is a member of Philautus temporalis. Type locality: "Peradeniya ... collected chiefly in the neighbourhood of the locality named .... Ceylon", Sri Lanka.

Removed from the synonymy of Philautus leucorhinus by Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 200, where it had been placed by Kirtisinghe, 1957, Amph. Ceylon: 69. Manamendra-Arachchi and Pethiyagoda, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., Suppl., 12: 200-202, provided an account and noted that this extinct species is similar to Philautus hypomelas and Philautus caeruleus.
