Atelopus simulatus Ruiz-Carranza and Osorno-Muñoz, 1994, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 19: 166. Holotype: ICN 07261, by original designation. Type locality: "Colombia, Departamento del Cauca, Municipio Belalcázar (= Páez), Km 11 carretera Belalcázar-Tóez, flanco oriental Cordillera Central, 2° 45′ latitud N, 76° 00′ longitud W de Greenwich, 2800 m."

Region of the type locality on the eastern slope of the Central Andes, Departamentos Cauca and Tolima, Colombia, 2500-2800 m elevation.
