Atelopus quimbaya Ruiz-Carranza and Osorno-Muñoz, 1994, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 19: 169. Holotype: ICN 23339, by original designation. Type locality: "Colombia, Departamento Risaralda, Municipio Pereira, corregimiento La Florida, Parque Rigional Natural Ucumarí (Corporación Autónoma Regional de Risaralda), camino El Cedral-La Pastora, flanco occidental, Cordillera Central, 4° 41′ latitud N, 75° 31′ longitud W de Greenwich, 2200-2500 m."

Region of the type locality on the western slope of the Central Andes, 2200-2900 m elevation, Departamento Risaralda near the border of Quindio, Colombia, 2200-2900 m elevation.
