Atelopus pachydermus (Schmidt, 1857)
Phirix pachydermus Schmidt, 1857, Sitzungsber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Phys. Math. Naturwiss. Kl., 24: 15. Holotype: KM 1013/1356, according to Savage, 1970, Proc. California Acad. Sci., Ser. 4, 38: 273-288. Type locality: "Neu Grenada"; later restricted by Schmidt, 1858, Denkschr. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. Naturwiss. Kl., 14: 257, to "Westen von Neu-Grenada, bei Bonaventura, in einer Höhe von 5000′" [Polish feet, therefore = 1150 m, according to Savage, 1970, Proc. California Acad. Sci., Ser. 4, 38: 273-288] sehr salten"; see Rivero, 1968, Caribb. J. Sci., 8: 23, who noted that type locality was dubious. Lötters, 1996, Neotrop. Toad Genus Atelopus: 39, suggested that the type locality was in error and noted that the nominal collector of the type material had likely not visited the region of the stated type locality. Coloma, Lötters, Duellman, and Miranda-Leiva, 2007, Zootaxa, 1557: 4, discussed the problem and suggested that the likely type localiy is one of two towns named Buenaventura, both in eastern Panama, in the province of Panamá.

Distribution
Cordillera Central and Occidental of northern Peru (Cajamarca and Amazonas) and in the Cordillera Oriental in southern Ecuador (Zamora Chinchipe), in paramo and subparamo habitats.

Mayor San Marcos, 45: 6. Almendáriz and Orcés, 2004, Politécnica, Quito, 25: 106-107, provided distributional data for Ecuador. Coloma, Lötters, Duellman, and Miranda-Leiva, 2007, Zootaxa, 1557: 1-32, provided an account, revised the species and its range, and noted that the records for La Libertad, Peru, were based on misidentification (subsequently shown to be Atelopus patazensis by Venegas, Catenazzi, Siu-Ting, and Carrillo, 2008, Salamandra, 44: 173).
