Atelopus laetissimus Ruiz-Carranza, Ardila-Robayo, and Hernández-Camacho, 1994, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 19: 155. Holotype: ICN 00410, by original designation. Type locality: "Colombia, Departamento del Magdalena, Municipio de Santa Marta, vertiente SE de la Cuchilla de San Lorenzo, al SW de la estación Forestal de San Lorenzo, sector NW Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, ca. 11° 11′ latitud N, 74° 3′ longitud W de Greenwich, 1900 m."

Vicinity of the type locality in the northwestern part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Magdalena, Colombia, 1900-2800 m elevation in humid montane forest.
