Comment

Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 251, treated Sanguirana as a genus pending its phylogenetic placement. Bossuyt, Brown, Hillis, Cannatella, and Milinkovitch, 2006, Syst. Biol., 55: 584, provided evidence that Sanguirana (their exemplar being Sanguirana sanguinea) is the sister taxon of Hylarana luzonensis (among species they sampled). Previously placed in Section Hylarana, subsection Hylarana, subgenus Sanguirana of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 329, therefore implying that Sanguirana is a junior synonym of Hylarana, sensu Che, Pang, Zhao, Wu, Zhao, and Zhang, 2007, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 43: 1-13. Stuart, 2008, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 46: 49-60, suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that Hylarana igorota and Hylarana luzonensis are most closely related to this taxon. Fuiten, Welton, Diesmos, Barley, Oberheide, Duya, Rico, Brown, and Erwin, 2011, Herpetologica, 67: 89-103, redelimited Sanguirana to include the former Hylarana everetti complex. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences confirmed the placement of Sanguirana as the sister taxon of Glandirana (and together the sister taxon of Hylarana) but employed an antiquated and nonmonophyletic taxonomy that obscured this result.
