Distribution

Eastern Hubei and southern Jiangsu south to southern Guangdong (see comment), eastern China.

Comment

This frog was formerly referred to Rana japonica. Fei, 1999, Atlas Amph. China: 154-155, provided a brief account, figure, and map. Regarded as close to Rana chevronta and in the Rana japonica group by Xie, Fei, and Ye, 2000, Cultum Herpetol. Sinica, 8: 74-80. In the Rana longicrus group of Fei, Ye, Huang, Jiang, and Xie, 2005, Illust. Key Chinese Amph.: 105. Li, Lu, and Li, 2005, Sichuan J. Zool., 24: 268-270, provided a distribution map for China and doubted the published report for Heilongjiang Province. Li, Lu, Wang, Wang, Fang, and Li, 2005, Herpetol. Sinica, 10: 63-67, compared this species in northeastern China with Rana chensinensis, Rana dybowskii, Rana amurensis, Rana huanrenensis, and Rana kukunoris. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 995-1000, provided an account for China and included it in their Rana longicrus group. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 280-281, provided a brief account including photographs of specimens and habitat. Yan, Jiang, Chen, Fang, Jin, Li, Wang, Murphy, and Zhang, 2011, Asian Herpetol. Res., Ser. 2, 2: 67, suggested on the basis of mtDNA evidence that populations from Fujian and Guangdong might be assignable to Rana longicrus.
