In the Rana tarahumarae group of Hillis XXX, Rana pustulosa group of Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 42, and equivalent subgenus Zweifelia of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 331. This species had been mistakenly referred to as Rana pustulosa in most literature. See comment under Rana pustulosa. See account by Webb, 2001, in Johnson et al. (eds.), Mesoam. Herpetol.: 31-35 (who noted very confusing variation in this species as related to Rana psilonota and Rana pustulosa). Chávez-Juárez, Alcaraz-Cruz, and Valenzuela Galván, 2004, Herpetol. Rev., 35: 185, provided the Morelos, Mexico, record.
