Distribution

Tributary streams that drain the west-facing slopes of the Sierra Madre Occidental from southern Sinaloa through Nayarit to Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán, Mexico.

In the Rana tarahumarae group of Hillis, Frost, and Webb, 1984, Copeia, 1984: 398-403, Rana pustulosa group of Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 42. In equivalent subgenus Zweifelia of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 331. Old extralimital records are based on Rana tarahumarae and Rana sierramadrensis.
