Northwest Mexico Leopard Frog (Liner, 1994, Herpetol. Circ., 23: 27; Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 108; Liner and Casas-Andreu, 2008, Herpetol. Circ., 38: 16).
East-central Sonora along the western foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, including extreme southwestern Chihuahua, through Sinaloa and Nayarit to central Jalisco, Mexico.
In the Rana berlandieri subgroup of the Rana pipiens group as defined by Hillis, Frost, and Wright, 1983, Syst. Zool., 32: 132-143. In the equivalent Rana (Pantherana) berlandieri group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 331. Most closely related to Rana yavapaiensis. Inadvertantly diagnosed and named in a published abstract; the formal description is by Frost and Bagnara, 1976, Copeia, 1976: 332. Zaldívar-Riverón, León-Regagnon, and Nieto-Montes de Oca, 2004, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 30: 38-49, provided a molecular phylogenetic analysis of this species and near relatives, and noted a close relative of this species (and of Rana yavapaiensis) from the vicinity of Atenquique, Jalisco, Mexico "Atenquique long form", as well as another more distantly related species from the same vicinity ("Atenquique short form"). Pfeiler and Markow, 2008, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 49: 343-348, discussed the identity of a population in the Sierra Aguaje, just north of Guaymas, and to the east near Nuri, Sonora, Mexico.
