Andinophryne Hoogmoed, 1985, Zool. Meded., Leiden, 59: 254. Type species: Andinophryne colomai Hoogmoed, 1985, by original designation.
Andes Toads (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 38).
Low to moderate elevations (500-2190 m) on the western slopes of the Andes in northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia.
Hoogmoed, 1989, in Fontenet (ed.), Treballs Ictiol. Herpetol., 2: 175, provided characters to diagnose the genus, but Graybeal and Cannatella, 1995, Herpetologica, 51: 122, suggested that there is no evidence in support of the monophyly of this taxon. Smith and Chiszar, 2006, Herpetol. Conserv. Biol., 1: 6-8, implied that this taxon should be considered a subgenus of Bufo; see comment under Bufonidae. Van Bocxlaer, Biju, Loader, and Bossuyt, 2009, BMC Evol. Biol., 9 (e131): 1-10, and Van Bocxlaer, Loader, Roelants, Biju, Menegon, and Bossuyt, 2010, Science, 327: 679-682, did not address this genus (nor has it ever been included in any large-scale analysis) and its relationships, and even its monophyly, have never been documented. Mueses-Cisneros, 2009 "2008", Herpetotropicos, Mérida, 5: 29-48, implied a close relationship with Rhaebo.
