Prior to the revision of Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297, placed in the Section Hylarana, subsection Hydrophylax, subgenus Papurana of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 326. See Donnellan, Adams, and Aplin, 1989, Herpetologica, 45: 336-343, for taxonomic concerns. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 74, provided a brief account. Kraus and Allison, 2007, Herpetol. Monogr., 21: 33-75, provided an account and discussed the ambiguities of identification outside of the known core distribution in Papua New Guinea and the d'Entrecasteaux Islands. Shea and Kraus, 2007, Zootaxa, 1514: 37-60, commented on types.
