Restricted to "Sarawak" by lectotype designation.

Distribution

Swamp forests in Sarawak, Malaysia, and adjacent Kalimantan, and Brunei, although likely more widely distributed.

Comment

Considered a junior synonym of Rana chalconota by Boulenger, 1920, Rec. Indian Mus., 20: 201; it was revived (as Rana labialis) by Van Kampen, 1923, Amph. Indo-Austral. Arch.: 220-221. Stuart, Inger, and Voris, 2006, Biol. Lett., 2: 470-474, provided molecular evidence for this species being closely related to Hylarana chalconota and Hylarana labialis, suggested that the species was restricted to Borneo and indistinguishable morphologically from other members of the Hylarana chalconota group. All previous literature should be used with extreme caution. The following comments were added prior to the work by Stuart et al. (2006): Discussed (as Rana chalconota) by Bourret, 1942, Batr. Indochine: 366-369; Berry, 1975, Amph. Fauna Peninsular Malaysia: 63-64. Liem, 1961, Herpetologica, 17: 69-71, compared Rana labialis with Rana chalconota. Before the discussion of Inger, 1966, Fieldiana, Zool., 52: 177, Polypedates raniceps was only tentatively considered a senior synonym of Rana labialis. Elevated from status as a subspecies of Rana chalconota; without discussion, by Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 328.
