Neotype designated (indirectly as Rana daunchina Chang, 1933) by Fei and Ye in Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 11161 as CIB 638899. Type locality: "a pond of Hountsinping [= Hungchun-ping], Mount Omei, Omeihsien . . ., 1300 meters altitude", Sichuan, China. Neotype from "Mt. Emei, Sichuan Prov., China: 1900 m". Preoccupied by Rana musica Linnaeus, 1766 (= Bufo terrestris).

In the Rana (Nidirana) adenopleura group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 324. Very similar to Rana adenopleura but differs in mating calls and egg deposition (S. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 305, provided a brief account (as Hylarana daunchina) including photographs of specimens and habitat.
