Comment

Prior to the revision of Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297, placed at one time in subfamily Raninae, tribe Pyxicephalini by Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 66, and subsequently in subfamily Pyxicephalinae by Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 317. The sister-taxon of Pyxicephalus according to Clarke, 1981, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Suppl., 15: 285-331; regarded as a subgenus of Rana by Dubois, 1981, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Suppl., 15: 225-284, and subsequently Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 66, and Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 317) regarded it as a genus. Most recently revised by Perret, 1995 "1994", Tropical Zool., 7: 255-269, and Ohler, 1996, Alytes, 13: 141-166. See comment under Pyxicephalus. Rödel, Gil, Agyei, Leaché, Diaz, Fujita, and Ernst, 2005, Salamandra, 41: 111-112, summarized the confusing taxonomic history of the species. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences, confirmed the monophyly of Pyxicephalinae and the sister-taxon relationship of Aubria and Pyxicephalus.
