Xenopus ruwenzoriensis Tymowska and Fischberg, 1973, Chromosoma, Berlin, 44: 337. Type(s): not stated but MHNG by subsequent report by Reumer, 1986, Rev. Suisse Zool., 93: 643; MHNG 2238.15 designated lectotype by Reumer, 1986, Rev. Suisse Zool., 93: 643. Type locality: "Semliki, Uganda"; amplified by Fischberg and Kobel, 1978, Experientia, 34: 1012, to "Rain forest near Bundibugyo in the Semliki Valley at the foot of the Ruwenzori Mountain (1° N, 30° E; altitude 700 m)".

Distribution

Foothills of the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda and extending into Kivu and Orientale, Dem. Rep. Congo.

Comment

Distinguished by chromosome number (2n = 108), hexaploid with respect to Xenopus laevis, by Tymowska and Fischberg, 1973, Chromosoma, Berlin, 44: 337. Morphology described by Fischberg and Kobel, 1978, Experientia, 34: 1012. Further karyotype description by Tymowska and Fischberg, 1980, Cytogenet. Cell Genet., 27: 39, who cited the authorities for the name Xenopus ruwenzoriensis as Fischberg and Kobel, 1978. No type material was noted in either account. Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 243-244, provided an account. Greenbaum and Kusamba, 2010, Herpetol. Rev., 41: 376, provided records for North Kivu and Oriental provinces of Dem. Rep. Congo.
