Mus. Civ. Stor. Nat. Genova, Ser. 3, 69: 210. Type locality: "Fernand-Vaz, French Congo [= Gabon]".

Perret and Mertens, 1957, Bull. Inst. Franç. Afr. Noire, Ser. A, 19: 554, regarded Hymenochirus feae as a subspecies of Hymenochirus boettgeri, but Perret, 1966, Zool. Jahrb., Jena, Abt. Syst., 93: 305, recognized Hymenochirus feae as a distinct species.
