Species World: 451; ZMB 20434 designated lectotype by Blackburn and Rödel, 2011, Herpetologica, 67: 282. Type locality: "Banjobezirk" (= vicinity of Banyo) and "Bamenda", Cameroon; restricted to "Banjobezirk" (vicinity of Banyo) by lectotype designation.

Southwestern Cameroon, in Cameroon Range (except for Mount Cameroon).

Schiøtz, 1963, Vidensk. Medd. Dansk Naturhist. Foren., 125: 36-38, provided records for Nigeria. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99-172, summarized the literature. See comment under Phrynobatrachus manengoubensis, which may be a synonym, or Phrynobatrachus werneri may constitute more than one species according to Zimkus, 2009, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 157: 796-813 (referring to what was subsequently named as Phrynobatrachus schioetzi). In species group C of Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883-900, whose analysis suggested that nominal Phrynobatrachus werneri is a species complex forming a paraphyletic series with respect to Phrynobatrachus manengoubensis. Blackburn and Rödel, 2011, Herpetologica, 67: 282, discussed the realignment of range with the description of Phrynobatrachus schioetzi.
