Phrynobatrachus ruthbeateae Rödel, Doherty-Bone, Kouete, Janzen, Garrett, Browne, Gonwouo, Barez, and Sandberger, 2012, Zootaxa, 3431: 55. Holotype: ZMB 77457, by original designation. Type locality: "Cameroon, near Dja Biosphere Reserve, N 03° 24.257′, E 013° 08.314′, 659 m a.s.l., primary swampy evergreen rainforest".

Known only from the type locality (), although expected to be more widespread in western Central African rainforest south of the Sanaga River, likely into Gabon.
Potential confused only with Phrynobatrachus batesii on morphology according to the original publication.
