Phrynobatrachus asper Laurent, 1951, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 44: 364. Holotype: MRAC unnumbered, according to the original publication. Type locality: "Riv. Makenda, 5 km au sud de May ya Moto, 2450-2500 m, bassin de l'Elila, Territoire de Mwenga, Kivu", Dem. Rep. Congo.

Distribution
Itombwe Highlands, southern Kivu, eastern Dem. Rep. Congo, above 8000 ft. in swamps and montane forest.

Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99-172, summarized the literature. Not addressed by Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883-900, so not assigned to species group.
