Cornufer johnstoni Boulenger, 1888 "1887", Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1887: 564. Holotype: BMNH. Type locality: "Rio del Rey" (= river Ndian), western Cameroon.

Tympanoceros newtoni Bocage, 1895, J. Sci. Math. Phys. Nat., Lisboa, Ser. 2, 3: 270. Holotype: Not found in the MBL by Perret, 1976, Arq. Mus. Bocage, Ser. 2, 6: 21, so presumably lost at that time; should it have been in MBL it would have been destroyed in 1978 fire. Type locality: "L'ile de Fernão do Po dans le golfe de Guiné". Synonymy by Barej, Rödel, Gonwouo, Pauwels, Böhme, and Schmitz, 2010, Zootaxa, 2340: 4.

Cornufer johnstoni — Werner, 1898, Verh. Zool. Bot. Ges. Wien, 48: 200. In error considered a new name and junior primary homonym of Cornufer johnstoni Boulenger, 1888, Parker, 1936, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1936: 147., when it is actually a subsequent usage of the senior name.

Distribution

Lowland forest and mangrove forest on the coastal plain of southwestern and southern Cameroon, Gabon, Bioko, and Equatorial Guinea.

France, 126: 386, reported this species (as Petropedetes newtoni) from Gabon. Lasso, Rial, Castroviejo, and De la Riva, 2002, Graellsia, 58: 21-34, provided notes (as Petropedetes newtoni)on ecological distribution in Equatorial Guinea. Barej, Rödel, Gonwouo, Pauwels, Böhme, and Schmitz, 2010, Zootaxa, 2340: 4-13, provided an account and revision.
