Nyctibatrachus sylvaticus Rao, 1937, Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Ser. B, 6: 399. Holotype: CCB; now lost according to Dubois, 1984, Alytes, 3: 157. Type locality: "Forests of Kempholey, Saklespur, Hassan, Mysore", Karnataka, India.

Biju, 2001, Occas. Publ. Indian Soc. Conserv. Biol., 1: 17, noted that some of the characteristics noted in the original publication do not fit the placement of this taxon in Nyctibatrachus. See brief account by Chanda, 2002, Handb. Indian Amph.: 75-76. Biju, Van Bocxlaer, Mahony, Dinesh, Radhakrishnan, Zachariah, Giri, and Bossuyt, 2011, Zootaxa, 3029: 70-73, provided an account. In the "northern clade", Nyctibatrachus majori group, of Van Bocxlaer, Biju, Willaert, Giri, Shouche, and Bossuyt, 2012, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 62: 839-847.
